Programs for Preschool and Kindergarten
The preschool and kindergarten years are when everything starts to come together. Children at this stage are ready to learn in a more structured way, to take on real academic challenges and to begin building the foundations that will carry them confidently into primary school and beyond.
At My First Step, we take that readiness seriously. Our Preschool and Kindergarten program combines structured academic learning with the play-based approach that has always been at the heart of what we do. The result is children who are prepared for what comes next, not just in terms of what they know but in terms of who they are becoming.
We welcome children from 4 to 6 years into a dedicated classroom environment designed for focused learning, creativity and growth.
Building the foundations that matter
At this stage the academic content becomes more intentional and more structured. But the way we teach it stays true to what we know about how children learn best: through engagement, curiosity and activities that feel meaningful rather than mechanical.
Reading readiness, phonics, early writing, numeracy and problem solving are woven together with music, science, creative arts and physical development to give children a genuinely well-rounded experience of learning before they step into Year 1.
What We Focus On
Academic Foundations
Phonics, reading readiness, early writing and number work form the backbone of the academic program at this stage. We teach these systematically through a structured curriculum proven across thousands of kindergartens in Malaysia, delivered through hands-on activities, storytelling and guided discovery so learning never becomes mechanical.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
A child who can think is more valuable than a child who can recite. We build critical thinking into every part of the day through questioning, investigation and activities that ask children to reason rather than just remember. The Eye Q Connection program specifically targets visual perception, logical thinking and problem-solving skills in preparation for the demands of primary school.
Music and Science Explorer
Our Myorff Music Program continues through the preschool years, building concentration, memory and creative expression through music and movement. Alongside this, Science Explorer activities develop observational skills and scientific reasoning through hands-on experiments. Children at this stage are capable of real scientific thinking and we take that seriously.
Trilingual Teaching
English remains the primary language of the classroom throughout the preschool and kindergarten years. Structured Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia classes continue, building on the foundation laid in the toddler years. By the time children leave My First Step they have meaningful exposure to three languages at an age when the brain is most receptive to multilingual learning.
Primary School Readiness
The question every parent of a kindergarten child is really asking is whether their child will be ready. At My First Step, readiness is not just about whether a child can read and count. It is about whether they can sit and focus for a sustained period, manage their emotions when things are difficult, follow instructions independently and approach new challenges with confidence. These are the qualities we build every day throughout the preschool and kindergarten years.
