Why July is Actually the Right Time to Start Looking at Preschools
Most parents start thinking about preschool in the last few months of the year. November comes around, the school brochures start appearing in the WhatsApp groups and suddenly everyone is trying to book visits at the same time.
By December, the good centres are already fielding long waiting lists. Some have stopped accepting new registrations entirely for January. If that has happened to you before, or if you want to make sure it does not happen this time, July is exactly the right moment to start.
The intake cycle most parents do not know about
Kindergartens and preschools in Malaysia mostly run on a January intake. That is the main enrolment window and it fills up faster than most parents expect, especially at smaller centres where class sizes are intentionally kept low.
The families who get their first choice of school are almost never the ones who started looking in November. They are the ones who visited in July or August, asked their questions, got a feel for the place and registered early while spaces were still available.
By the time the year-end rush begins, they are already sorted.
What you can actually do in July
You are not rushing into anything by starting now. You are just giving yourself time to make a good decision rather than a pressured one.
Visit two or three schools. Walk around. Meet the teachers. Let your child play in the space if the centre allows it. Ask the questions you actually want to ask, not the ones you manage to squeeze in during a ten-minute tour in December.
July visits are quieter. The staff have more time for you. You get a more honest picture of what the school is actually like on an ordinary day rather than during the end-of-year chaos.
Questions worth asking when you visit
What does a typical day look like for a child in your child’s age group? How do teachers handle the first few weeks for children who are still settling in? What is the ratio of teachers to children in the classroom? How do you communicate with parents throughout the week?
These questions sound simple but the answers tell you a lot. A school that can answer them clearly and warmly is a school that has thought carefully about the experience from your child’s point of view.
If your child is starting in January 2027
If your child is anywhere between one and three this year, January 2027 could be a natural and well-timed start for them. The earlier you visit, the more time you have to ask questions, get a feel for the place and make the decision without any pressure behind it.
There is no rush to decide today. But deciding in July rather than December means you choose on your own terms rather than whatever spaces happen to still be available.
